When you are on a special diet, it can be a nightmare to try and find a place to eat.
So what should you look for?
Steak joints are always a good bet. You just have to be strong and NOT order all the fixins. Don't feel deprived either. Get an awesome cut of meat and double up on the vegetables or a potato (Whole30 approved!) with toppings on the side.
Steak too spendy? I feel you. Listen, fast food joints are not your friend. I once went to a McDonalds and ordered an Egg McMuffin without the muffin. It was not pretty and it looked liked something that came out of an MRE.
Skip to 2:37 if you just want to appreciate the MRE goodness.
So go a step up. Find a Denny's or Shari's type place that serves breakfast all day. Those kinds of places will have something on their menu, even if it is just a burger patty. Seriously, though, look on the side dishes menu too and piece together something. Ask questions. A server would rather you ask a few questions than send the food back.
I don't care if you are so introverted you barely speak to your loved ones. You will ask the server questions. You will ask them about spices and sweeteners if that is something you need to be careful of. You are not being a pain. A restaurant does not want you to get sick off their food and they don't want to see it come back to the kitchen where it will just end up in the trash. They want you satisfied. You will come back, you will bring your friends, you will tell people.
That being said, I am a big fan of Red Robin. Order it protein style and you will get a beautifully messy lettuce wrapped burger of yumminess. And the fries are gluten free! And if you get their rewards card you will earn free beautifully messy lettuce wrapped burgers of yumminess.
Now for the caution. Beware anything on the "healthy" menu. These are things that are going to be laden with artificial sweeteners. Especially in things like salad dressings, etc. Remember, one man's healthy is another man's death sentence.
One last note on eating out when you are trying to make better choices. It is ok to once in awhile be a wee bit naughty. Just don't go crazy. Don't make a day of it. Be smart. Don't sabotage yourself. But hey, have an ice cream once in a great while or some chocolate. Just don't swim around in a vat of peanut butter and chocolate, no matter how tempting that sounds.
